Self Reflection

In this post, I am going to be reflecting on the 8 categories in my portfolio and how I have improved this year.

Creative Writing: I think I mastered the objective on this one.  I’m still very proud of the story that I wrote, and I think that I handled it very well.  I’m especially proud of the idea behind the story, and I think I wasn’t afraid to not rush the plot, even in my first draft.  I did add more throughout the creative writing unit, making my story even better.

Academic Writing: I think I met the objective with this category.  Throughout the year, we did a lot of academic writing pieces.  I myself am not the biggest fan of academic writing, but I think I do well with it.  I met the objective because I did it well, but maybe not as well as I could’ve.

Big and Small Picture Revisions: I think I also met the objective with this one.  One of the things I consider myself best at is making revisions to make my story better.  One time I did this very well was with our choice writing.  My original draft was only 17 pages, but then I did a lot of taking out, editing, and adding of scenes so that it ended up being 23 pages.

Grammar and Conventions: I think I meet the objective with this. I think I’m very good with grammar, and I rarely ever get points taken off for it.  Using good grammar comes very naturally, so it’s something I don’t really have to worry about with my drafts.  It also really helps with peer editing, as I can help others to fix their grammar.

Close Reading and Analysis: I think that this area shows improvement.  Before this year, I had skimmed over books and hadn’t been able to really take them in.  While I’ve gotten better in this area, I still tend to do this, especially if I’m reading books that I’ve already read before.  I think that doing reading reflections helps me to take in the book and not skim it.

Case Files: And Then There Were None

Holistic Reading and Application: I think this area is one where I meet the objective.  I also think that even though I do tend to skim books sometimes, I’m good at reading applications.  I can relate to books a lot of the time, which is why I love reading so much.  Reading applications are very natural for me.

Choice Reading Reaction: Clockwork Angel

Considering Authors Craft and Style: I think this area shows improvement.  Throhout this year, and especially during the choice reading unit, I found myself more able to think about what the author was trying to do with the book, and I found that I enjoy books with multiple viewpoints a lot.  This area improved a lot throughout this year, but it could definitely get better.

Speaking/Presenting: I think that I met the objective in this area.  All of my speeches throughout this year went better than I thought they would.  I found that if I practiced, I’m actually pretty good at public speaking and it’s not as scary as it seems.  This area seemed the hardest at the beginning of the year, but now, it’s not that bad.
